Privacy

How Halves handles personal information. Written for the Privacy Act 2020. Last updated October 2026.

What we collect

  • Your email address, to sign you in. No passwords are stored.
  • What you enter in a workbook: figures, labels, notes, offers, messages, and the files you attach.
  • Information about the other person in a separation, as entered by you or by them. Inviting them is how they are told.
  • Your private safety answers, visible only to you.
  • Aggregate page counts on public pages through Plausible, which uses no cookies and no personal identifiers. Workbook pages are excluded.

Why

To give two people, and the lawyers they invite, one shared record of what is in the pot and what backs it up. We do not use your information for marketing, and we do not train AI on it.

Information about the other person

When you record information about the other person, the Privacy Act expects them to be told (principle 3A, in force 1 May 2026). Halves does this when you invite them: they are shown what has been recorded before they decide to join. If telling them would put you or someone else at risk, you do not have to invite them. Talk to a lawyer or Community Law first.

Who can see what

  • Shared tabs: everyone in the workbook, including any lawyers.
  • Your private area: only you, plus any single item you choose to show your own lawyer.
  • Nobody can edit or delete another person's entries. Disagreements are flagged, not overwritten.
  • There are no read receipts and no record of who looked at what. The history records changes only.
  • Our operators do not look at workbook content unless you ask for support and agree, and that access is logged.

AI document checks

When you ask for a line to be checked against a document, that one file and the figure on the line are sent to Anthropic's API, which returns whether they match and a short quote. Anthropic does not train on this data. Each check is logged in the workbook's AI log with who asked for it and when. Nothing is sent unless someone presses the button.

Where it is kept

In Sydney, Australia, with Supabase (database and file storage) and Vercel (the website). Email notices are sent through Resend. These providers act for us and hold the information under contract.

How long

While a workbook is open. Twelve months after a workbook is closed, its data is deleted, unless both parties have asked for an export to be kept or a legal hold applies. You can export everything you can see at any time, and you can leave a workbook, which deletes your private area.

If something goes wrong

If there is a privacy breach likely to cause serious harm, we will tell the Privacy Commissioner and the people affected as soon as practicable, and say what we are doing about it.

Your rights

You can ask for the personal information we hold about you and ask for it to be corrected. Write to help@halves.nz. If you are not happy with our answer you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
